Ever wanted a chance to go back and do something over? Well, here’s your opportunity. Several times a year, Mercury, the planet of communication, appears to move backwards in the sky, striking fear in the hearts of many. Long lists pop up everywhere, warning of all the things NOT to do unless you wish to incur some terrible fate. Here’s the deal: the most important thing to remember about a retrograde is how it begins: re. And every word that begins with these magical two letters, is not just your friend, but from February 23-March 17, your best friend. So go on and redo, rethink, reinvite, return, rehearse, reimagine. If you can re it – you can do it.
Example: As a playwright, some of my favorite times are during Mercury retrogrades. This is when I get a chance to take one of my plays, dust it off, and see it in a new light. My play Heathens was not only rewritten during a retrograde but also re-titled. And during the same retrograde, I also reconnected with an old friend who was looking for a new play to produce. Before I knew it, I was being introduced to a director, who has turned out to be not only a talented collaborator but a dear friend as well. Within eighteen months of this introduction (a hop and a skip in theatre time), Heathens received a full production Off-Broadway. So just because it’s a retrograde, don’t feel you have to hide under the covers until it passes. Get out there and embrace every opportunity that comes your way.
